A walk from Karve Nagar Bus stop to Kothrud Bus stand

According to guidelines for pedestrian facilities, observed the facilities of footpaths, FUBs, cycle track and junctions on karve road from Karvanagar bus stop to Kothrud bus stand.

  1. Area– Karvenagar bus stop to Vandevi junction

General Observation-

At the Karvenagar bus stop and at the Vandevi bus stop there were much crowd because of morning time and there are four big colleges and two big schools and many hostels so many college students and working young population travel from here. There are two to three slum areas near to these two bus stops so many working people also travel from this stop.

Characteristics of footpaths and other facilities of pedestrians observed by following criteria

Footpath surface –

The footpath from both the side is not even, there is uneven surface, there are cracks, bumps not comfortable space for walking. There are no tactile pavers for visually impaired people on one side of footpath.

Footpath width –

The footpath is not enough wide to accommodate pedestrian flow on the both sides.

The left side of footpath near to flyover is very small where at a time only one person can walk.

Obstructions –

There are obstructions of open electric DPs and garbage is problem for walking to the people.

Encroachment –

In the India informal commercial activities are integral part of footpath.At this area there were various small stores on the footpath or immediately attached to the footpath. Mainly snack centers, tea and juice vendors are there, and waste water coming from these snack centers on the footpath which makes it dirty. There is a temple on the left side of footpath which also create barrier for walking. At the back side of Karvenagar bus stop two wheelers parked.

 Potential for vehicle Conflict –

On the left side of  Karvenagar bus stop, footpath is narrow and near to the carriage way and there is end of a flyover, due to this carriage way become smaller so pedestrian walking on the road can found in vehicle conflict situation as vehicles going from both flyover and carriage way.

Continuity –

There is no continuity of footpath in this area. On the right side of footpath near to Vandevi bus stop there were no pavers on the footpath.

Cycle track-

There is only half cycle track on the right side of Vandevi bus stop.

Foot under bridge / Subway –

There is a subway at Karvenagar bus stop but it is locked and filled with garbage. And area near to this subway is also dirty because of garbage.

Vandevi Junction –

At this halt signal junction pedestrian didn’t get sufficient time to cross a road from left to right side. At a signal time pedestrians can cross half the road easily but then they have to cross while vehicles are going.

Refuge space-

At the Vandevi junction there are two refuge spaces, at one refuge space there are no bollards at one space there are bollards. Both spaces are very small and having uneven surface where person can’t stand properly while crossing the road.

Views of pedestrians-

 Not talked with many pedestrians. Talked with some women and old lady, asked them what are the problems they are facing while walking on the road, they was in hurry. But they talked about general things like air pollution causes problems, the construction work causes traffic in the city.   

  • Area – From Vandevi junction to Kotharud Stand

General observation

At the Dahanukar colony area there is not having much crowd of vehicles and pedestrians. At the Kothrud stand junction there is crowd of vehicles.

Footpath surface-

At the right side of a road, footpath is even, there is no cracks and bumps on the surface, comfortable sspace for walking. Left side footpath is also comfortable for walking.

Footpath width-

Footpath is wide enough on right side of the road, On the left side of the road footpath is not wide enough for walking many people. There is wide footpath near to Kotharud stand in front of many big shops.

Obstructions-

There are not many obstructions on this footpath.

Encroachment-

There are smaller shops of fruit sellers on the left side of the footpath.

Potential for vehicle conflict-

In this area there is no place where vehicle conflict can happen.

Continuity-

Right side footpath is continue but on left side at some points footpath is discontinue due to market places.

Foot under bridge/ subway-

There is a subway near to Dahanukar colony junction, this subway is clean and having lights in it but at that junction not much traffic in the morning so people not seems to use it.

There is another subway on this road next to this subway is closed and not so cleaned.

There is foot over bridge near to Kotharud junction which is having lift for coming down on a side.

Cycle track

There is a continue cycle track on the right side of the road from Vandevi Junction to Dahanukar colony Junction. After that there is no cycle track.

Refuge space

At the Kotharud Stand junction there is a refuge space which is quiet good in condition for crossing.

Overall observation of site visit –

  1. By visiting this stretch of two  kilometers get to know that the footpath conditions at Karvenagar and at Vandevi area is bad than the condition of Dahanukar colony’s footpath and Kotharud bus stand’ s footpath.
  2. Encroachment on footpath at Karvenagar area is more than the Kotharud stand area.
  3. Karvenagr area is more unsafe to pedestrians because there is no signal under the flyover bridge to cross the road for pedestrians. There are more market places and vendors near to footpath and bus stop which create crowd.
